The Brigitte Trust is an independent registered charity offering emotional support and practical help at home to people and their families facing cancer, MND, MS, heart and lung failure and other life-threatening illness. The service, which has been available for thirty years, is free of charge and our volunteers help in many ways, providing:
- Emotional support and a listening ear
- Respite for carers
- Sitting with a family member whilst a carer takes a break
- Transport to hospital appointments, shopping and trips out
- Bereavement support
We offer our service in Surrey - please see the Area Map for details.
Our volunteers normally provide the service for three hours per week, but this is flexible according to the needs of the client. In providing emotional support our volunteers will be sensitive to the individual and cultural needs of each person supported, with confidentiality maintained and respected.
Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds. All are required to attend an intensive initial training course as well as monthly supervision and ongoing training. All volunteers have undergone full DBS checks. However, please note that our volunteers are not trained or insured to offer nursing or personal care.
A client family member says....
"I knew that during the Brigitte Trust Volunteer visit my mum had the undivided attention of someone who was kind and caring, and she could talk about anything she needed to. That meant that I could temporarily be ‘off duty’ yet feel reassured that mum was in excellent company that would lift her spirits. That made me feel calm too."
"During the past five years we have been associated with your organisation, our volunteer has always been professional,, committed, compassionate and caring. This, together with her wise counsel and sense of humour has made a huge difference to all our lives during what has turned out to be a much longer and more difficult illness than anyone could have imagined."
Please note: Our offices are open Tuesday - Thursday. Messages received out of hours will be answered as soon as possible. Please see our contacts page if you need to reach one of our Service Co-ordinators.
